Conservatives Attempt To Make Obama Sandy Response A Liability In Election's Final Stretch

As the presidential campaign enters its final days, and with Mitt Romney showing small but substantial polling deficits in key swing states, prominent conservatives are making what appears to be their final gambit of the election: turning Hurricane Sandy into a liability for President Barack Obama.

On Friday night, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a Romney surrogate, appeared on "Piers Morgan Tonight" to argue that Obama has fallen short in his response to the superstorm, which ravaged parts of New York and New Jersey this week. In particular, Giuliani argued that Obama was neglecting his duties as commander in chief by continuing with campaign stops in Las Vegas and Ohio after touring disaster areas in New Jersey on Wednesday.

Said Giuliani:

I don't know what the heck [Obama] was doing in Nevada, when people were still being discovered in New York. If I were the president of the United States, I sure wouldn't be flitting around the Midwest and the West. My job would be making sure this thing was followed through to the very end. Maybe the first couple of days he was keeping his eye on the ball, but we've got gas lines now that are a mile long. We've got bodies that are still being discovered. And we've got a president who's playing campaigner in chief.

Several other conservative figures have mimicked that line of attack. Fox News host Sean Hannity tweeted:

Sean Hannity
#NJ #Sandy hmm was he in Vegas or Ohio bashing Romney? Did he mention when NY and NJ might get some gas?

Republican strategist Patrick Ruffini predicted that the Sandy recovery effort would become a political liability in coming days, much the way Hurricane Katrina did for the Bush administration in 2005:

Patrick Ruffini

Storm reaction has the potential to turn really bad for the government in the next 48 hours. This is when it happened for Katrina.

Meanwhile, conservative website Breitbart.com adorned its front page with a banner headline reading, "New Jersey An 'Apocalyptic Vision' Two Days After Obama Photo Op."

While the recovery effort does remain far from finished, the notion that Obama has ignored it in order to focus on campaigning falls flat under scrutiny. Obama has maintained an active role in the hurricane recovery, even after he returned to the campaign trail, and has routinely been in communication with governors and local lawmakers while flying on Air Force One.

On Friday, responding to severe fuel shortages in storm-affected areas, the White House ordered the Department of Defense to "deliver 12 million gallons each of gasoline and diesel fuel, mostly from commercial suppliers, to staging areas in New Jersey," according to The New York Times. It also authorized the tapping of the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, in order to

On Saturday, the president will continue to oversee the federal government's response to Sandy.

Per The Associated Press:

Obama will convene a meeting with his team in the morning, to be joined by telephone by officials including Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Federal Emergency Management Administrator Craig Fugate, as well as other members of the Cabinet.

Following the meetings, administration officials will visit storm-damaged communities throughout the affected region to view response efforts firsthand, and make sure necessary resources are being provided.

(AP) ? The Charlotte Bobcats figured they'd set one dubious NBA record last season. They didn't need want start this season off by setting another.

After finishing 7-59 and etching their name in the NBA annals with the worst winning percentage (.106) in league history last season, diminutive point guard Kemba Walker and the Bobcats made certain they wouldn't break the league record for consecutive losses.

Charlotte ended last season with 23 straight losses, but Walker scored a career-high 30 points to lift the Bobcats over the Indiana Pacers 90-89 in Friday night's season opener. It was an impressive win against a team that has had plenty of success on the road. Indiana was 19-14 last season away from home and won its opener at Toronto on Wednesday night.

The NBA record for consecutive losses was set two years ago by the Cleveland Cavaliers, who lost 26 games following the departure of star LeBron James.

"It was something that was in the back of all of our heads," Walker said of the losing streak. "We didn't want that streak to keep on with us, so to get it over with now was extremely important."

It also gave coach Mike Dunlap a big victory in his first game as NBA head coach.

"The most important thing was to kill the elephant and that elephant was that losing streak," Dunlap said. "We had to get that off of everybody's back. It's just one of those marks you want to clean off the board."

The victory was a bit of early validation for Dunlap, who stressed to his young players this summer that the only way they can compete with the more talented teams in the league this year is to step up their defensive pressure and play like the team's new motto ? tougher, faster and stronger.

In Dunlap's eyes that only comes about through conditioning, which meant running players continually through 3- and 4-hour practice sessions. He figured there was no way he could run full court traps at opponents if his players weren't in shape.

So he ran them. And ran them. And ran them some more.

Sure, there was some grumbling along the way.

But when owner Michael Jordan sensed Dunlap was getting some resistance from players, he pulled them aside and reminded them that he backs Dunlap's no-nonsense philosophy all of the way.

Jordan talked about building a "winning culture" in Charlotte and believes Dunlap is the right man to carry out that mission.

"His energy level and his passion are as strong as mine," Jordan said Thursday. "I think he presents an attitude that you buy in or you're not a part of it. If you want to be here, be here. If you don't want to be here, then we don't want to put you here. That's just the way we are right now."

Walker said players have gotten the message and they believe in what Dunlap is preaching.

"Guys are really, really buying in and that's all it takes," Walker said. "It's about sacrifice. It's about buying into what your leader is preaching. It showed tonight. We made some huge stops at the end of the game."

Along the way they also stopped a losing streak before it became a distraction.

"Now that it's over we don't ever want to get to that point again," Walker said.

Jobs growth quickens, giving Obama some relief

By Jason Lange

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. employers stepped up hiring in October and the jobless rate ticked higher as more workers restarted job hunts, a hopeful sign for a lackluster economy that has been a drag on President Barack Obama's re-election chances.

Employers added 171,000 people to their payrolls last month, the Labor Department said on Friday. The government also said 84,000 more jobs were created in August and September than previously estimated.

The jobless rate edged up a tenth of a point to 7.9 percent, but that was due to workers surging back into the labor force. Only people who are looking for a job count as unemployed.

"This report is consistent with the emerging picture of an economic recovery that is continuing to regain traction after grinding to a halt earlier this year," said Millan Mulraine, senior U.S. strategist at TD Securities in Toronto.

The employment data was the last major report card on the economy before Tuesday's presidential election. Polls show Obama and Republican Mitt Romney locked in a dead heat in a race in which the nation's feeble jobs market has been front and center.

"Really vigorous is a number like 250,000 to 300,000 jobs a month. This is simply not good enough," Romney economic adviser Glenn Hubbard told CNBC.

Alan Krueger, the head of Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, said the report showed the economy moving in the right direction. "While more work remains to be done, today's employment report provides further evidence that the U.S. economy is continuing to heal," he said in a statement.

Despite the political wrangling, the impact of the report on the election will likely be muted as most voters' perceptions on the economy are likely fixed by now.

While the rise in the jobless rate was expected, the increase in payrolls beat even the most optimistic forecast in a Reuters poll. U.S. stocks opened higher but then turned down, while the dollar strengthened and prices for U.S. government were mostly lower.

GLASS HALF FULL OR HALF EMPTY?

A full recovery from the 2007-09 recession remains distant and even sustained monthly job gains of 171,000 would likely bring down the unemployment rate only slowly. The jobless rate, which peaked during the recession at 10 percent, remains about 3 percentage points above its pre-recession level.

Indeed, the persistently high unemployment rate has undercut wage growth. Average hourly earnings fell one cent last month to $23.58. Over the past year, they have risen just 1.6 percent, the lowest on records dating to early 2007. A narrower measure that looks at just production and non-supervisory employees is up only 1.1 percent, the lowest since at least 1964.

In October, the jobless rate rose because 578,000 people entered the workforce. That helped push the participation rate, a measure of the portion of the population in the labor force, up two tenths of a point to 63.8 percent. A gauge of the proportion of working age Americans who have a job hit a three-year high at 58.8 percent.

While the jobless rate rose, it only partially reversed a big drop in September. A broader measure of underemployment that includes the unemployed, people who can only get part-time work and people who want a job but who are not looking ticked down a tenth of a point to 14.6 percent, its lowest level since April. Still, that represents 23 million Americans.

All of the gain in payrolls was in the private sector, which added 184,000 jobs in October, the biggest increase since February. The government shed 13,000 positions.

Private service-providing jobs were up 163,000, with retail trade adding 36,400 jobs. Temporary help services, often a harbinger of future full-time hiring, added 13,600 jobs, more than reversing the previous month's decline.

The construction sector saw a 17,000 increase in jobs, the largest rise since January, while factories added 13,000 workers, snapping two straight months of decline.

Even with the stepped-up pace of job creation, the U.S. economy faces a real threat of a renewed recession next year.

Without action by lawmakers, taxes will rise and government spending will fall to the tune of about $600 billion. That "fiscal cliff" could easily cause the economy to contract.

Europe's debt crisis, which has hit factories around the world, including those in the United States, is also weighing on the U.S. recovery.

Given the uncertain outlook, businesses have been hesitant to invest. A separate report on Friday showed orders for non-defense capital goods, excluding aircraft, rose just 0.2 percent in September after a similarly tepid 0.3 percent gain in August.

Still, overall orders received by U.S. factories bounced back 4.8 percent, nearly reversing all of a deep slide seen in August.

Anti-discrimination laws and marriage | Sutherland Daily

Many people wonder why conservatives who speak up for traditional marriage and the natural family also often oppose fundamentally flawed laws that would add ?sexual orientation? to anti-discrimination laws. If you ask some ?gay rights? advocates, the answer is simple: Conservatives are motivated by bigotry and simply hate homosexuals. But for reasonable, thinking individuals who like to consider an issue before attacking and condemning those who disagree with them, there are answers. What follows is one of those answers.

First, a quick thought exercise. Imagine a world where religious individuals are attacked as ?bigots? because they maintain and express sincere religious beliefs on sexual behavior and relationships. Imagine a world where their livelihoods and their worship services are publicly targeted and disrupted because they take legitimate political action grounded in their religious values. Imagine a world where justifiable social/political/policy views on issues like marriage and the family are dismissed offhand as ?hateful,? with little to no thoughtful consideration.

This is a world grounded in anti-discrimination policies based on ?sexual orientation.?

Anti-discrimination law and ?sexual orientation?

Anti-discrimination laws are based on the idea that society ought to give special protections to groups who have been subject to irrational or hateful prejudice. In other words, their purpose is to protect specific groups of individuals from actions toward them motivated by hate or bigotry. Hence, characteristics listed in anti-discrimination law (e.g., race, sex and religion) are called ?protected classes.?

What this means is that members of protected groups receive special legal protections that others do not have. For example, in a racial discrimination lawsuit filed against an employer that makes it to court, the employer will have to prove that he did not discriminate against the racial-minority individual, as opposed to being presumed innocent of discrimination until proven guilty.[1] Naturally, this mind-set has bled from the courts into society at large, to the point that when we hear charges of racial discrimination, we often take it for granted that they are true. Further, in the specific context of protecting ?sexual orientation,? the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that there is no difference between discriminating against homosexual conduct and an individual?s ?sexual orientation? ? they are the same thing in terms of discrimination, and are presumed to be motivated by hatred or bigotry.[2]

What does this mean for adding ?sexual orientation? to anti-discrimination laws? It means that lifestyle decisions clearly connected to ?sexual orientation? ? any lifestyle choice clearly connected to a homosexual?s sexual relationships ? will likely receive special protections that treat encumbering actions from others as hateful or bigoted discrimination. In other words, adding ?sexual orientation? to anti-discrimination policies will lead to a presumption in the law, and hence in society, that actions which do not accommodate the homosexual lifestyle are motivated by hatred or bigotry, even if the real motivation is otherwise.

How does this impact marriage policy?

The addition of ?sexual orientation? and ?gender identity? to anti-discrimination law has become a prerequisite of sorts to establishing same-sex marriage. For instance, all of the four state high court decisions that redefined marriage (including California, though that was overturned by voters) referenced their state?s inclusion of ?sexual orientation? in anti-discrimination law to help support and justify their decision.[3] Given the foundational idea behind anti-discrimination law and its implications, it is easy to understand why this is the case.

With the presumption firmly established in law and society, via anti-discrimination policies, that choosing not to accommodate the homosexual lifestyle is an expression of bigotry and hate, it is a simple matter of logical extension to view marriage policy through this lens. Policies which protect the traditional definition of marriage become mere expressions of irrational loathing of homosexuals, as those policies do not accommodate the lifestyle decisions of homosexuals who choose to live in a ?committed, marriage-like? relationship. Sincere and legitimate social views ? concerns about the welfare of children, which traditional marriage policy is designed to protect, and views of those whose opinions are grounded in religious values ? get publicly denigrated and dismissed because, in the world of heightened protection of ?sexual orientation,? they simply become justifications of hate against homosexuals.

So while adding ?sexual orientation? to anti-discrimination laws does not directly change marriage policies, it undermines the foundation of ideas and social views in which traditional marriage policy is grounded and justified ? couching them as irrational, hateful, or bigoted discrimination against homosexuals. Further, advocates for ?same-sex marriage? understand this, and it is one reason why they often dismiss any reasoning of their political opponents as hateful or bigoted. It is also one reason why they are so intent on pushing anti-discrimination policies based on ?sexual orientation? at federal, state, and local levels. Not only do such policies accomplish ?gay rights? advocates? ostensible discrimination goals, but they also become a tool for accomplishing their larger goals in marriage policy.

The ramifications of anti-discrimination laws based on ?sexual orientation? do not end there. If a lack of accommodation for homosexual lifestyle choices is presumed to be motivated by hatred and bigotry, what does that mean for religious views and values which consider such behavior to be sinful? Can society tolerate public expressions of such religious beliefs (i.e., religious liberty) while simultaneously condemning related actions by religious believers as hateful and discriminatory? Further, what are the consequences for public policies intended to protect and support the primary social interest in the institution of the family ? the bearing and raising of children ? when anti-discrimination laws provides the highest and most strict legal protections to biologically childless homosexual relationships?

Few Utahns, if any, support hatred and bigotry against others. Many Utahns do, however, reasonably seek to protect and uphold the fundamental ideas and principles on which civilization?s social institutions ? traditional marriage and the family ? are based. By undermining these foundational ideas with presumptions of hateful motivations against homosexuals ? ironically in the name of tolerance ? anti-discrimination policies based on ?sexual orientation? have proven to be (and are continuing to prove) incompatible with such ideas. There is little compelling evidence to suggest that both can co-exist for any long period time, and so conservatives choose to fall on the side of marriage and the family.

Guest post: Take your blog to the speaking circuit | Styling You

When I started my blog, Tune into Radio Carly,?in December 2009, I never imagined where it would take me.

I created it to develop and distribute my writing and to connect with new people. Three years on, my blog has helped create a very successful side career (I already have a day job in the government) as a writer, speaker and community TV presenter.

My blog could be classed as a lifestyle blog with a difference. I write about food, fashion, live music, (failed) romance and blogging. I also write a lot about what it?s like to live with a chronic illness and visible facial difference ? a severe skin condition called Ichthyosis form erythroderma (meaning scaly red skin).

I write about the medical and social challenges of this condition. I also write a little about body image diversity, highlighting the need for people with visible facial differences to be represented more widely in the media. In doing so, I receive emails and comments from many people with similar skin conditions and various chronic illnesses, as well as from people without illnesses, telling me I?ve helped them in some way. I?ve given them information, hope or courage to tell their own story.

Shortly after starting my blog, I submitted some blog posts to a state government-run disability website called DiVine. The editor asked me to write for them, and I?ve since written for Mamamia, ABC?s Ramp Up, The Hoopla and News Limited, plus a number of guest posts on blogs, as well as shared my story with journalists in the mainstream media.

In addition to the writing, I?ve shared my story through speaking.

Carly Findlay, right, with Layne Beachley at the Aim for the Stars ball in 2012

I started speaking about five years ago at a workplace event for International Day of People with Disability. Speaking in front of colleagues was good for developing my confidence. Mid way through 2010 I auditioned for a role on a disability TV show called No Limits, and I was cast as a presenter. We discuss disability issues on a panel and interview a wide range of people. This has been great because I have learnt a lot about disability issues, culture, history and language, and met some amazing friends.

I really enjoy sharing my story face to face with an audience, and I also believe that because of my appearance, a speech often has greater impact than the written word. Because of my blog, I have an archive of stories to share, and I can draw on these and modify them for various audiences. I speak about living with Ichthyosis ? hoping to make people laugh and think, and change their perceptions of people with visibly different appearances. I also speak about blogging and social media.

I have spoken to many audiences including young people at the Royal Children?s Hospital, potential sponsors at a community television event, doctors and genetic counsellors, bloggers, and at the Australian Public Service Commission?s ethics and social media conference

It?s funny how speaking at one event, or being involved in a particular community, can help you get to another.

My contacts in the disability and blogging networks have been fantastic in putting me forward for speaking opportunities ? including radio appearances. The lovely Nicole Avery from Planning with Kids asked me to speak at the AusBlogCon in 2011. My good friend and ABC Ramp Up editor Stella Young put me forward for an ABC interview. Members of No Limits asked me to feature in a 15 minute community radio documentary. Just recently, I was filmed for a federal government social media initiative for International Day of People with Disability.

The best speaking opportunities have come from blogging! You can take your blog to the speaking circuit.

I gave a speech at my work about blogging as an effective way of story telling. Someone in the audience was a Girl Guides leader and she asked me to speak at the next Guides meeting. I did, and at that meeting, I met a woman who worked at a disability organisation. She then asked me to speak at her organisation?s youth training event. When I arrived at the event, there were 600 school children that I had to speak in front of.

And in August 2011 I received a tweet from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), based at the University of the West of England, in Bristol, UK. They had read a blog post of mine, and shared it with their readers. I checked out their website, was interested in what they do, and contacted them to see how I could work with them. They asked me to review a computer based psychology program about appearance for young people.

Earlier this year some of the CAR team came to Melbourne for a conference and they met me. They asked me to speak at their Appearance Matters conference in Bristol in July 2012. Of course I said yes!! It was such a good experience ? I spoke to around 50 academics and doctors, and received great feedback. My speech is here.

My hospital?s dermatology department has been great in helping me get to speak in England, and they too have given me speaking opportunities. I now alternate between patient and speaker, educating dermatologists and geneticists about both the medical and social elements of this condition.

Diversifying from your blog means that you can develop and share your skills in other areas, which in turn could earn you some money. While I don?t work with many PR companies, I feel the writing and speaking opportunities given to me by community groups, hospitals and universities are far more beneficial to my career ambitions.

If you are thinking about taking your blog from the written to spoken word, here are some of my tips:

From little things big things grow

Continue blogging. Your blog is a great resource for content for your speeches, and also for sharing your completed speeches (transcripts and video) with your readers who couldn?t be at your speaking event.

Attend events where you?ll meet bloggers and other people in your interest areas. Share your work on social media ? you never know who might discover it. Offer to do speaking in your workplace or local community ? your church or a school are good places to start.

Practise your speaking

Attend Toastmasters groups or book into a short course. Practice in front of your family or friends, or even in meetings at work.

I?ve not done Toastmasters, but I did a lot of presentations during my university degrees, and I?m fortunate that through doing community TV, I can watch myself back and find areas where I can improve.

Speak about what you know

As a blogger, you are often an expert in a certain field ? parenting, cooking, fashion. As a speaker, I think it?s best to speak about what you know too. It makes for an authentic speech. I feel most confident speaking about myself ? my skin condition and blogging. When I write a blog post, I write it how I speak or think. This means my blog posts can often easily be translated into a speech.

Know your audience

You may be speaking about the same topic at all of the events you?re invited to, but your audience demographic will not always be the same. Your content may need to be tailored to suit your audiences. For example, I have used simpler language for children, provided technical explanations for non social media users and covered more strategic content for academics and doctors (I included parts of my Masters thesis for these speeches).

Be yourself

You don?t need to be like an evangelical speaker to have an impact. I recommend you speak clearly, maintain eye contact with your audience, and try to make them think and make them laugh.

In my writing and speaking I am always honest and authentic. I hope not to come across as seeking pity. I am always myself, always realistic, but never sympathy seeking. If I can make someone laugh at a really unfortunate situation that I?ve been faced with, I know I?ve done my job right.

Do you speak because of your blog? What tips do you have for bloggers asked to speak to an audience?

Carly Findlay lives in Melbourne. She?s a blogger and writer, community TV?presenter and lover of cooking, live music, fashion and Darren Hayes.?Carly blogs?here??and tweets at?@carlyfindlay?|?Photo credits:?Bio photo Camille Condon and Layne Beachley photo by Carol Gibbons Photography.

Editor?s note: I too have been asked to speak many times since starting my blog and my business. The courses that really helped me step up to those keynotes and presentations ? and deal with confidence in getting in front of an audience ? were the courses run by Carren Smith. Carren ? a Bali bombing survivor ? has turned her story of survival into one that can help others tell their story. I?m very proud to call her my friend.

Share your blogging know-how

Thanks so much to everyone who plays along with my Saturday blogging linky. Sharing your blogging knowledge with other bloggers and potential bloggers really is how this blogging world best goes round. It?s a bit like having a mini online conference here every week.

Remember if you want to join in, just add your link below. The link needs to be to a post ABOUT BLOGGING?(all others will be deleted). Please fill in the box where it says ?name? like this:?BLOG NAME: Blog post title. That way your blog gets a plug and if you include the title of your post, you?ll attract readers interested in the topic.

BRING BACK JOBS TO AMERICA & EVANSTON - Evanston, IL Patch

BRING BACK JOBS TO AMERICA & EVANSTON

?

In my last Patch Blog - ?Evanston Mayor in Denial? - I described how I have tried to meet with Evanston Mayor Tisdahl to discuss an idea I have for bringing jobs back to Evanston.

?

Today, I will tell you the idea

Well, she hasn?t wanted to hear it, but I thought I should tell you about it just in case I can generate enough community enthusiasm to make something happen. I hope enough of you see the potential in the business case and will want to join me in trying to make this a reality.

?

My Credentials

First, let me tell you about my credentials so you know I am not just some kooky guy who doesn?t know about business, strategy, missions, critical paths, startups, operations, legalities, competition, partnerships, building great teams, inspiring and managing people and processes and getting things done.

?

I have been an attorney since 1980. I practiced in a lot of areas and was one of the founders of the largest independent law firm in DuPage County. (I moved out there after growing up in Evanston - fresh out of law school I couldn?t afford a home and property taxes in Evanston). My practice eventually became heavily concentrated in corporate and technology law. In 1998, the board of a financially failing international software company asked me to do a turn around, I did it - saving and creating hundreds of jobs in the process. After 10 years of turning around and enlarging the business, the shareholders who were about to lose everything they had when I took over became multimillionaires.?

As part of our business we had a customer support team that was recognized as a leader in the industry. Our call center and support desk was located in the midwest and our good midwestern attitude and concern for customers gave us an advantage over call centers located off-shore or overseas.

?

The Genesis of the Idea

A month or so ago, I traded my old Buick for a used pickup truck at Carmax. The Buick had a satellite radio installed which I enjoyed on long trips. The pickup had a satellite radio in it but no service. So, I called the satellite radio company - let?s call them DogStar - to transfer service. My call was answered by an off-shore call center. I could not understand the techno English this operator was throwing at me: a combination of her difficult to understand accent and her inability to depart from her ?script? and tell me in consumer terms what I needed to do. After 15 minutes with this person and not getting one step closer to accomplishing a simple service transfer she gave up and hung up on me.

?

I called DogStar back and spent another 15 minutes with another off shore call center. I had the same communications problem, but this time, instead of hanging up, the operator said: ?Let me connect you with someone who might be able to help.? She transferred the call to a North American call center and it took their operator about two minutes to make the transfer of service happen.?

?

?Wow,? I thought, there might be an opportunity here. I did my mini-market survey by talking to others. Almost all had a story similar to mine. You may, too. All of those that did have the problem said they would willingly pay a premium to be able to speak to a domestic call-center. ?It was just such a waste of my time,? said one man. ?My time is worth money.?

?

I started Googling ?domestic call center? and discovered that some companies are advertising that their help-desks are based in the United States. They see it as a value-add for customers and differentiator from their competition.

?

Further, as I listen to the radio, I hear ad after ad for services and/or digital products. That?s because we don?t make much here anymore and we cannot really compete in a cost efficient way with manufacturing in China and the other places we sent our ability to ?make stuff.? Besides, don?t we want more evolved and relevant jobs that don?t turn our workers into robots? How about jobs that also teach skills and expertise and can lead to higher callings?

?

THEN IT HIT ME: WHY NOT BRING THESE OFF-SHORE JOBS BACK TO AMERICA!?!? WHY NOT START HERE IN EVANSTON!

?

Why this will work in Evanston

?

Evanston has the people, the facilities, the businesses, the know how and the need to Bring Back Call Center Business to the United States. Evanston can - as it has done in the past - show other communities how to be activist on important societal issues.

?

Evanston has hundreds of people that could find meaningful employment in our call center. ?

  • ?Young people would quickly soak up the training they would need to succeed, accumulating experience and knowledge about interacting with customers and the public, learning technology, specific knowledge about products and services they are supporting and preparing them for moving to careers - not just jobs.
  • ?Older unemployed people, who have spent the better part of their lifetimes in business, could find meaning, purpose and income in applying their experience in building, supporting, managing and working in this community based business.

?

Evanston has businesses that could support the business and their community by sourcing their call center work to our call center.

  • Businesses would benefit by having the differentiator and competitive advantage of a LOCAL domestic based call center.

Evanston has the empty real estate to house the call-center.?

  • Let?s get some vacant buildings back on-line.

?

Evanston has the need to provide an opportunity and chance to our youth who face such miserable job and economic prospects. I am ashamed to be part of a generation that has left such an awful mess for our children and grandchildren.

?

I cannot do this alone. While I have necessary skills and experience (including establishing a 400-person data center providing youths a learning and technology job experience in a locale where their only alternative was low paying, repetitive assembly line work) I really believe this should be an idea that gets wide spread community support. I want to send the message throughout the land that my home town, Evanston, has brought together its private resources to address the jobs crisis. I want to send the message that together we can be entrepreneurial and not rely only on government to drag us out of hole we have dug.

?

We are in formation stage. I need people to contact me if they have any interest in joining in. I would like - with your help - to develop a 90-day plan. Anything longer won?t get things done.

?

So, contact me by replying on Patch or by emailing me at ejlieberman@gmail.com if you are:

?

  • A business that would consider using the power of a local help desk / call center.
  • An experienced business person that can help explore and implement this idea.
  • A person, young or old, that would want to participate.
  • A property owner in Evanston that has a vacant property that would fit our needs.
  • A person who just wants to keep informed about.

?

Finally, pass the link to this Patch Blog to friends, family and associates that you think should be aware of this initiative.

?

Thanks,

Eric Lieberman

Weathering Storms with Words | Psychology Today

?I don?t know what we?ll do if the power goes out.? Anyone facing a storm, especially a hurricane, can relate. Yet the dad making this comment for a local news station wasn?t concerned about food rotting in the fridge, living in the cold and dark for days, or being cut off from news updates. He was worried about what his kids would do if they couldn?t rely on their Play Station in weathering Hurricane Sandy. God forbid his family members have to actually engage each other.

Forgive me if I have no pity for their situation. Because if there?s any silver lining to a major storm, then it?s that it provides the perfect excuse for families to enjoy each other?s company, giving them the chance to bond. Power problems or not, storms allow you to tune out the rest of the world and focus on those who matter most, giving you the opportunity to do things like:

  • Play board or card games.
  • Talk about your life ambitions.
  • Read (even by candlelight) out loud to each other.
  • Play a musical instrument.
  • Discuss local or global events.

And this is just a preliminary list. Let?s not forget that most peoples around the world and throughout history have not had Play Stations, let alone TVs, DVD players, laptops, iPhones, Facebook? to keep them entertained. Like it or not, storms force families to reconnect instead of avoid each other. Everyone should take advantage.

The same goes for couples. Lovers, too, can put down their Smart Phones and hunker down with some intellectual foreplay during a storm, sharing sentiments around matters of the heart, such as:?

  • Storms like this make me really appreciate?
  • I love being holed up and having this kind of down time with you because?
  • I?ve been thinking that we could further enhance our love life by trying?
  • You know what I?d really like to do with you right now?

Whether it?s just two of you or an entire brood, try to make the next storm all about turning inward and making the most of this opportunity for quality time together. Such can have as great and as long of an impact as a hurricane, only, in doing a world of good.
