Do Brain Scans of Comatose Patients Reveal a Conscious State?

News | Mind & Brain

Scans allow a researcher to communicate with people previously written off as unreachable and offer hope in identifying those who might respond to rehabilitation

Adrian Owen still gets animated when he talks about patient 23. The patient was only 24 years old when his life was devastated by a car accident. Alive but unresponsive, he had been languishing in what neurologists refer to as a vegetative state for five years, when Owen, a neuro-scientist then at the University of Cambridge, UK, and his colleagues at the University of Li?ge in Belgium, put him into a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine and started asking him questions.

Incredibly, he provided answers. A change in blood flow to certain parts of the man's injured brain convinced Owen that patient 23 was conscious and able to communicate. It was the first time that anyone had exchanged information with someone in a vegetative state.

Patients in these states have emerged from a coma and seem awake. Some parts of their brains function, and they may be able to grind their teeth, grimace or make random eye movements. They also have sleep?wake cycles. But they show no awareness of their surroundings, and doctors have assumed that the parts of the brain needed for cognition, perception, memory and intention are fundamentally damaged. They are usually written off as lost.

Owen's discovery, reported in 2010, caused a media furore. Medical ethicist Joseph Fins and neurologist Nicholas Schiff, both at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, called it a ?potential game changer for clinical practice?. The University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, soon lured Owen away from Cambridge with Can$20 million (US$19.5 million) in funding to make the techniques more reliable, cheaper, more accurate and more portable ? all of which Owen considers essential if he is to help some of the hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in vegetative states. ?It's hard to open up a channel of communication with a patient and then not be able to follow up immediately with a tool for them and their families to be able to do this routinely,? he says.

Many researchers disagree with Owen's contention that these individuals are conscious. But Owen takes a practical approach to applying the technology, hoping that it will identify patients who might respond to rehabilitation, direct the dosing of analgesics and even explore some patients' feelings and desires. ?Eventually we will be able to provide something that will be beneficial to patients and their families,? he says.

Still, he shies away from asking patients the toughest question of all ? whether they wish life support to be ended ? saying that it is too early to think about such applications. ?The consequences of asking are very complicated, and we need to be absolutely sure that we know what to do with the answers before we go down this road,? he warns.

Lost and found
With short, reddish hair and beard, Owen is a polished speaker who is not afraid of publicity. His home page is a billboard of links to his television and radio appearances. He lectures to scientific and lay audiences with confidence and a touch of defensiveness.

Owen traces the roots of his experiments to the late 1990s, when he was asked to write a review of clinical applications for technologies such as fMRI. He says that he had a ?weird crisis of confidence?. Neuroimaging had confirmed a lot of what was known from brain mapping studies, he says, but it was not doing anything new. ?We would just tweak a psych test and see what happens,? says Owen. As for real clinical applications: ?I realized there weren't any. We all realized that.?

Owen wanted to find one. He and his colleagues got their chance in 1997, with a 26-year-old patient named Kate Bainbridge. A viral infection had put her in a coma ? a condition that generally persists for two to four weeks, after which patients die, recover fully or, in rare cases, slip into a vegetative or a minimally conscious state ? a more recently defined category characterized by intermittent hints of conscious activity.

Sony Looks to Rebound with New Budget Smartphone

Sony is coming back to the smartphone market with the release of the Sony Xperia Ion. GigaOM reports you can get one for less than $100, and targeting the budget-conscious consumer might work in Sony?s favor.

?The device isn?t exactly Sony?s flagship phone, but the imaging and NFC features ? as well as its low price ? might make it attractive to U.S. audience. The inclusion of LTE is also key, showing Sony is specifically optimizing its devices for U.S. networks...?

But Sony?s history doesn?t suggest the new phone will have much success, especially after its failed attempt with the Xperia Play last year. An editor for CNET says the Xperia line has been on the market for the last four years but has yet make an impact in the U.S..

?...there are a few haves (Apple and Samsung...) and many more have-nots (everyone else). With the entrenched players shoring up their positions in the U.S., it?s doubly tough for new or returning entrants to get back into the game.?

But for those looking to combine wireless devices with a high-quality camera this could be the phone for you. A reporter for Pocketnowvideo exclaims at the amazing speed of the phone?s 12-megapixel rear camera.

?One of the neatest features about this is the quick capture feature in the camera... In less than a second, it?s actually 1.2 seconds between shots. So I can actually take it, take it, take it. ?Wow.??

There is no doubt, Sony is looking for a turnaround. Canada?s CBC News says currently Xperia is not a household name and this might be because of decisions Sony has made in the past.

?In its history Sony has actually not invented things but refined things that others have invented, for example, it?s Playstation, VCR, CD, DVD presences have all been invented by others.?

The Xperia Ion will hit stores June 24 as AT&T?s first 4G LTE smartphone.

In Iraq, car bomb kills 10 on Shiite pilgrimage

(AP) ? Iraqi police say a car bomb has hit a major Shiite pilgrimage, killing 10 people on the last day of the commemorations for a revered imam.

The bombing comes days after a wave of 22 coordinated explosions earlier this week killed 72 pilgrims in what was among the worst attacks in Iraq since American troops withdrew six months ago.

A police official says Saturday's car bomb exploded just after noon in a Shiite neighborhood in northern Baghdad. He says 10 people were killed in the blast and 35 were wounded. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

PFT: Broncos LB Williams tweets pic of playbook

Chad OchocincoAP

At a time when it?s believed by many that no high-profile players want to play for the Dolphins, a high-profile player in whom no one else apparently is interested reportedly wants to reverse that trend.

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reports that Chad Ochocinco wants to play for pro football team headquartered in his hometown of Miami.? Though the report would likely be accurate if the name of any NFL team were inserted in the title, it makes sense for Ochocinco to want to play for the Dolphins.

It actually could make sense for the Dolphins to want him.

As pointed out in our initial look at teams that could be linked to Ochocinco, the current status of the Dolphins? depth chart suggests that Ochocinco would be an upgrade.? The question is whether the Dolphins want to embrace the distractions that go with having Chad in the fold.

Pre-Hard Knocks, the answer would have been ?no?, possibly preceded by ?hell?.? But now that the Dolphins seem to be embracing attention, even if it comes with distractions, Ochocinco makes sense from a football standpoint and a business standpoint.

In a roundabout way, Ochocinco also could help reduce the distractions that HBO and NFL Films will bring to training camp.? Chad will be a magnet for the cameras and microphones, which will result in less attention being devoted to mining the rest of the roster for useful video and sound.

La Canfora suggests that Ochocinco could have a new team within a week.? But if anyone is pursuing him now, they?re doing so on a top-secret basis.

As to the obvious potential landing spots, La Canfora rattles off several that, per team sources, aren?t interested, including the Rams, Panthers, Cowboys, Ravens, Raiders, and Jaguars.? But the anonymous views expressed on an off-the-record basis by one or more team employees is often misleading, and never binding.? Like other veterans with baggage, flirting with a player like Ochocinco creates a distraction.? There?s no reason to acknowledge interest unless and until the decision has been made to sign him.

The biggest red flag for any truly interested team (apart from the cliff off of which his game fell in 2011) would come from a genuine lack of interest by the Jaguars.? Chad?s offensive coordinator in Cincinnati, Bob Bratkowski, now runs the offense in Jacksonville.? And the Jags would benefit from help at the position, even with Justin Blackmon and Laurent Robinson and Lee Evans in town.? And the Jags would benefit from the butts-in-seats buzz that Ochocinco brings.

So if the Jags don?t want him, maybe no one else should.? If, with rosters currently at a 90-man limit, something doesn?t happen soon, it may not happen at all.

Experience Metro With Splashtop?s Android And iPad Windows 8 Metro Testbed App

unnamedSplashtop made waves (thankyouverymuch) in April when the mobile app company launched the Windows 8 Testbed Metro for the iPad. This iPad app allowed owners to experience the few highs and many lows of Windows 8 Metro. As Engadget put it then, it must be a bit uncomfortable for iPads, but it's a very impressive app offering nearly all the functionality of Metro including the many multitouch swipe functions. And now it's available for Android tablets, too.

Creative Market Nabs $1.3M From SV Angel, CrunchFund To Become An Etsy For Digital Design

Screen shot 2012-06-07 at 5.27.29 PMEarlier this year, ColourLovers founders Aaron Epstein, Chris Williams and Darius A Monsef IV (a.k.a. Bubs) launched Creative Market in private beta to give its community of color and template-creating designers a place to sell their digital content. And, today, they're announcing that they've closed a second round of funding to support the impending launch of Creative Market. (Which Monsef says is slated for the next few weeks.) The $1.3 million in new funding comes from new investors, which include SV Angel, CrunchFund, Longworth, Ludlow Ventures, and a number of YC alums, and brings the startup's total funding to $2.3 million. Existing investors, like Atlas Ventures, Morado Ventures, 500 Startups, Seraph Group, and Zelkova Ventures also contributed to the round.
