Seattle University men snap six-game losing streak

The energy surge that nearly propelled the Seattle University men's basketball team to an upset of 24th-ranked Virginia last week carried over into Thursday's game, a 91-72 win over Nebraska-Omaha on the first night of the eighth annual Elgin Baylor Classic at KeyArena.

Aaron Broussard provided the biggest spark for the Redhawks, scoring a career-high 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting. He'd set his previous career best of 29 points on Dec. 21 against the Cavaliers.

"As we would say back in the day, he's at peace with his game," said Seattle U coach Cameron Dollar. "He keeps being aggressive, keeps being assertive, keeps making plays. I'm definitely pleased with what he's doing."

Broussard also led Seattle (3-8) with 11 rebounds, six on the offensive end. He received a nice hand from the KeyArena crowd of 2,302 when Dollar lifted him from the game with three minutes to play and Seattle U leading by 23.

"I'm just playing hard all over, trying to get steals and not just focusing on the scoring," said the 6-foot-5 senior from Federal Way. "I got a couple of offensive rebounds. I'm just trying to be aggressive, catching in the midrange and driving (to the basket)."

The Redhawks, who snapped a six-game losing skid, play San Jose State (5-8), an 81-66 winner over Coppin State earlier Thursday, at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the tournament title game.

Eric Williams added 19 points for Seattle U, four of his nine baskets coming on slam dunks. Clarence Trent finished with 11.

The keys to this win? "Group effort, energy and aggressiveness," Dollar said. "We did a much better job, especially in the first half, of attacking the rim."

SU women win

A layup from Talisa Rhea and a steal by Sylvia Shepherd in the final 20 seconds helped the Seattle U women rally from a one-point deficit and secure a 74-70 win over St. Francis on the first day of the Washington Dental Service Holiday Hoops Tournament at KeyArena.

The win snapped a two-game skid for the Redhawks (7-6), who next meet Eastern Michigan at 3:15 p.m. Friday for the tourney title. Eastern Michigan (6-5) defeated Saint Louis 66-55 earlier Thursday.

St. Francis (5-6) of Loretto, Pa., winner of the past two Northeast Conference titles, went ahead 70-69 with 43 seconds left when Rhonda Watts hit a three-pointer.

Following a timeout, Rhea responded with a driving layup at the 19-second mark, putting Seattle U ahead 71-70. Shephard then picked off a long St. Francis pass and was fouled.

The sophomore guard hit two free throws with 12 seconds left. Nickia Gibbs of St. Francis missed a pair of free throws with nine seconds to play. Seattle U's Kacie Sowell grabbed a rebound, was fouled and hit one free throw with seven seconds left to clinch the win.

Rhea led Seattle with a season-high 21 on 8-of-13 shooting from the field.

Sowell scored 17, and Shephard and Amani Butler each finished with 11.

"The thing that I liked tonight about our team was our fight," said Seattle U coach Joan Bonvicini, whose team had lost its two previous games by one and nine points. "We showed a lot of poise. We needed to win a close game like this."

This Cat Might Be Better At Fruit Ninja Than Your Kids

catiOS devices are generally very accessible for most people. But for felines? Apparently so according to the video recently tweeted by Halfbrick, the developer of Fruit Ninja. It's clear within seconds of the video starting that the cat has done this before. This cat slashes fruit like a boss. As UberGizmo notes, the cat displays a surprising amount of accuracy and navigates the arcade mode with ease. But Fruit Ninja is one thing. I wanna see this cat slice and dice its way through Infinity Blade II.

Royal grandkids visit Prince Philip in hospital (AP)

LONDON ? Queen Elizabeth II emphasized the importance of family in her Christmas message this year and her grandchildren brought some Christmas cheer to her husband, Prince Philip, as he recovered in a hospital after a heart procedure.

The 90-year-old prince was forced to miss the royal family's traditional Christmas festivities ? opening presents together, going to a morning church service and viewing the Queen's Christmas broadcast ? after doctors put a coronary stent in. Philip had gone to the hospital on Friday complaining of chest pains, which doctors determined were caused by a blocked coronary artery.

Buckingham Palace said it does not know yet when Philip will be released.

"The Duke is in good spirits and will remain in hospital under observation for a short period," the palace said.

Prince William and his brother Prince Harry drove in separate cars to Papworth Hospital from Sandringham, Elizabeth's sprawling estate where the royal family gathered to celebrate Christmas.

Prince Andrew's daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, also came to the hospital, along with Princess Anne's children, Zara and Peter.

The 45-minute visit from the royal grandchildren came after Elizabeth's annual, pre-recorded Christmas message to the nation aired. The royal family reportedly watches the broadcast together every year.

The theme of her broadcast ? family ? was especially poignant with Philip in the hospital recovering. The message was recorded Dec. 9, before Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, went into the hospital.

Wearing a festive red dress, the Queen said the importance of family was driven home by the marriages of two of her grandchildren this year ? William and Zara. William's royal wedding at Westminster Abbey captivated the world in April, and Zara had a quiet but elegant celebration in July.

The 85-year-old queen has made a prerecorded Christmas broadcast on radio since 1952 and on television since 1957. She writes the speeches herself, and the broadcasts mark the rare occasion on which the queen voices her own opinion without government consultation.

Elizabeth spoke of the strength family can provide during times of hardship and how friendships are often formed in difficult times.

She pointed to the Commonwealth nations as an example that family "does not necessarily mean blood relatives but often a description of a community."

With one notable absence ? Philip's ? the royal family kicked off their Christmas earlier Sunday with a traditional morning service at St. Mary Magdelene Church, on the Sandringham Estate.

The huge crowds that gathered outside the church to catch a glimpse of the Queen got an early peek when the royals made a quick private visit to the church ahead of the services. Less than two hours later, they were back ? in different clothes ? for the Christmas service.

The Queen arrived first ? dressed in a lavender-colored coat and hat ? in a royal limousine, leading the way into the church. Her oldest son, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, trailed behind.

Harry walked in with his brother William and new sister-in-law Kate ? now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Kate, whose style is closely watched around the world and who sends any dress she wears flying off the shelves in Britain, wore an eggplant-colored coat and matching hat.

Among the other royals, Zara was joined by her new husband Mike Tindall, an English rugby player.

After the service, local children lined up to give bouquets of flowers to the queen. Thanking each well-wisher, the queen then handed the bouquets to granddaughters Beatrice and Eugenie.

Well-wisher Camilla Fitt, 71, said Charles told her that his father was "very determined" to get well.

"Charles said he is coming on," said Fitt.

The royal family then traveled back to the house for lunch, an integral part of their celebration.

In Michigan, Decade Of Job Loss Is Finally Coming To End

Free Press:

Like a patient surviving a medical emergency, Michigan has the chance to learn some important lessons as it emerges from 10 straight years of job losses.

And like a patient learning to do push-ups and knee bends, Michigan must learn to become better educated and entrepreneurial in its business model as it recovers from this lost decade.

The state will add jobs in 2011 for the first time since 2000. The prolonged period of job losses tells many experts that even the state's core manufacturing industries require a more educated work force -- something the state may have trouble delivering.

4 jailed for 'exorcism' killing of Australian (AP)

DARWIN, Australia ? Four people convicted in the beating death of a woman during what they said was an exorcism ritual on a remote Australian island were sentenced Friday to several years in jail.

Sarah Bara was beaten to death with sticks last year on Groote Eylandt off the northern Australian coast. Last month, Glenys Wurrawilya, Susie Wurrawilya, Paul Wurramara and Roderick Mamarika pleaded guilty to negligent manslaughter in connection with the beating, which several children witnessed.

Some of the accused had originally claimed that they beat Bara as part of an exorcism intended to cleanse her of the devil. But on Friday, Northern Territory Supreme Court Justice Peter Barr said the accused attacked Bara simply to cause her pain and humiliation.

"I am not satisfied that any of the accused thought she had the devil in her," he said.

On the day she was killed, Bara had been asked to find a bag containing medication for Susie Wurrawilya. When she couldn't find it, both Glenys and Susie Wurrawilya began to hit her. Bara was then forced to sit on the ground while a circle of fire was lit around her and was again struck with sticks. An autopsy found she had been hit with extreme force more than two dozen times.

Mamarika and Wurramara did not participate in the beating, but watched and did nothing to stop it, Barr said.

The four received sentences ranging from five years to seven-and-a-half years in jail.

Groote Eylandt, home to an Aboriginal and mining community of around 1,500, is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the northern Australia mainland.

The cat who vanished in sunny Florida and is found in snowy Colorado four months later

By Daily Mail Reporter

Last updated at 4:16 AM on 24th December 2011

It's a Christmas miracle - but it's also something of a yuletide mystery.

A cat that went missing in Florida has turned up 2,000 miles away in Colorado.

The one-year-old orange and white male tabby cat called Waylon disappeared in August.

Scroll down for video

Waylon the missing cat

Waylon the missing cat

He had been adopted from an animal shelter in Naples, Florida, by Daniel Johns, the Huffington Post reports.

But Waylon, it appears, had other plans. Within an hour of arriving at his new home Waylon escaped through a dryer vent.

?

Last Wednesday, Waylon was found wandering in Littleton, Colorado.

How - and when - he got to Colorado is a complete mystery.

One amazing journey: How the cat travelled 2,000 miles and when it happened currently remains a mystery

The good samaritan who found Waylon took him to the Foothills Animal Shelter in Golden.

They scanned a microchip embedded under the cat's fur, linking the cat to Mr Johns.

Mr Johns told the Naples News: 'It's a Christmas miracle. He's a really cool, sweet cat. He walks on a leash and knows his own name.'

He said he plans to travel to Colorado and pick up Waylon next week.
