Book Review Offspring by Scott Appleton ~ Family, Parenting ...

About the Book:

Summary from the publisher

The Hemmed Land is changing...and so is the daughter born out of the ultimate sacrifice...

With Ilfedo's beloved wife buried, the Hemmed Land is destined to change, as is he. The sea serpents have again invaded the land and Ilfedo must discover the power behind the sword of the dragon, even as he accepts his people's call to become their Lord Warrior. His daughter grows into a beautiful young woman whose wisdom and love endears her to the people, and sets her on a journey to find a race of unique and powerful creatures. But far to the north an evil long ago stirred, and Letrias's workings soon threaten everything Ilfedo holds dear.

About the Author:

He was homeschooled through high school. He developed a love for reading and writing from his mother, and a love for science from his father. In high school he became involved with an astronomy group out of North Scituate, Rhode Island. His first published piece was a theoretical article for their newsletter. Upon graduating from high school at seventeen he traveled to Thailand as a student missionary and stayed for three months.

Upon his return to the United States he studied Math and English at a community college and later obtained a certificate in Creative Editing through an online course.

Over the course of several years he created The Sword of the Dragon series and published multiple news articles, as well as works of poetry, and short fiction. Currently he divides his time between writing his novels, and spending time with his wife and son.

Review/Thoughts:

Offspring is packed with action, adventure, and suspense. ?The author uses rich language to describe the classic struggle of good and evil. ?His creation of the Megatraths and the mysterious entity trying to control Ilfedo adds to the adventure and suspense.

My twelve year old son was very impressed by the story line, characters, and the action-packed plot. ?Though we both agree that it would have been a little easier to follow the characters if we had the background from the first book. ?We plan on going back and reading the first book soon.

I was pleasantly surprised that this book kept my son occupied for at least two full weeks. ?He usually devours books in a couple of days. ?But the complicated twists and turns of this novel (we don't want to give away any spoilers) slowed him down and made him really think about what was going on in the story. ?(It takes mom a lot longer to read a book of that size with a tot at home)

Although this is written with a Christian perspective, it is not preachy and is subtle in its subtext. ?I recommend this for older kids 12+ due to the vocabulary level. ? ?

Definitely a must read for fantasy fans who enjoy a great story with well-described characters that feel like they are right there with you.

Dyson's DC39 stateside-bound, couples canister footprint with 'Ball'-functionality come March
Lest you thought its previous 'City' endeavors were the pinnacle of diminutive bag-less suction, here comes Dyson with the DC39. Previously available elsewhere, the British company's latest canister will soon sashay into the US for a cool $499. That's a sizable wad of cash, yet that investment nets you access to a diminutive vacuum stuffed with the company's 'Ball' technology -- enabling a teensy unit already capable of a lot of suck to be infinitely more maneuverable. That's apparently no small feat, as it took seventy engineers more than three years to stuff over a hundred components into that spherical derriere. Those interested can look for it mid-March -- for the rest of us, PR and a cutaway of its insides await after the break.

College baseball roundup: Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama win; Auburn loses

ATHENS, Ga. -- Freshman Hunter Cole went 4-for-5 and had two RBIs to lead ninth-ranked Georgia past Winthrop 13-5 Friday at Foley Field.

Eight of Georgia?s 16 hits on the night went for extra bases as the Bulldogs remained undefeated at 5-0 while the Eagles dropped to 0-5. Georgia sophomore pitcher Alex Wood went six innings for the win to move his record to 2-0.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the first, when junior shortstop Kyle Farmer hit a double to drive in senior outfielder Peter Verdin for the first run of the game. Farmer also scored in the first, bringing the score to 2-0. Georgia scored again in the third when Cole was credited with an RBI-double in the third to make it 3-0. There was some discussion among Georgia coach David Perno and the umpiring crew if the ball cleared the fence and bounced off the television stand and back in to play. However, the ball was ruled an RBI-double.

After being blanked through the first four frames, the Eagles grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fifth. However, the Bulldogs responded with a four-run outburst of their own. Wood came back to pitch a perfect sixth inning before a trio of relievers preserved the win.

Verdin, Cole, Levi Hyams and Brett DeLoach all scored off of a total of five hits in Georgia?s big inning. Georgia increased its lead, 8-4, in the seventh inning when DeLoach was driven in on a single by senior Colby May.

In the eighth, Hyams blasted a run-scoring triple to right field to bring in Farmer. Moments later, DeLoach made it 10-4 when he brought in Hyams on a single. DeLoach went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Hyams went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Winthrop added a run in the ninth off freshman Luke Crumley.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second game of the series with the Eagles

ATLANTA -- Junior right-hander Buck Farmer fanned a career-high 13 batters and the offense pounded out 15 hits as No. 10 Georgia Tech rolled past Ohio State in the opener of a three-game series at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Sam Dove had three hits, while Chase Butler and Daniel Palka each homered for the Yellow Jackets (5-1), who led 9-1 after the fourth inning and never looked back in winning their fifth-straight game.

Farmer, who matched his previous career-high of nine strikeouts in Tech?s season-opener versus Kent State, racked up 13 punchouts and allowed just four runs on three hits to earn his first win of the season (1-1). The last Jacket with 13 strikeouts was Deck McGuire in the 2009 home-opener versus Lipscomb.

Ohio State (2-2) held a brief 1-0 lead in the second inning when Josh Dezse homered to lead off the frame.

It was the first of three solo shots for the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, who finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

@BR Scoreline:ALABAMA 14, ARKANSAS-PB 0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama won its first game of the season with a rout of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The Crimson Tide were swept last weekend by Florida Atlantic.

Kenny Roberts led the Tide, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

Taylor Guilbeau (1-1) pitched six scoreless innings to pick up his first career win.

Alabama will start right-hander Charley Sullivan in Game 2 of the series today at 3 p.m.

ARIZONA 8, AUBURN 1

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Auburn surrendered a five-run second inning to No. 8 Arizona and lost at Hi Corbett Field.

The Tigers fell to 3-3 while Arizona improved to 4-1.

The teams will close out the series with a doubleheader today, beginning at 4 p.m.

Derek Varnadore (1-1), a former Chattahoochee Valley Community College standout, took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and a walk in six innings, striking out three. Kurt Heyer (2-0) got the win for Arizona, allowing just an unearned run in seven innings, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out four.

Auburn?s lone run came in the top of the second as Creede Simpson singled and scored from second on a throwing error by Arizona third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean on a Dan Glevenyak sacrifice bunt attempt. The leadoff single for Simpson extended his hitting streak to 10 games dating to last season. Jay Gonzalez finished the night 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to six games with a fifth-inning single.

NATO findings on Quran burning due soon

At least six people have been killed amid ongoing violence over the improper disposal of Qurans at NATO's main base in Afghanistan. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

An investigation into the burning of copies of the Quran at a NATO base in Afghanistan, which sparked deadly protests, could be concluded as early as Thursday, senior military officials said Wednesday.

Seven people were killed in clashes between Afghan security forces and demonstrators across Afghanistan who were angry at the burning of Muslim holy books.

The demonstrations prompted the U.S. to lock down its embassy and bar its staff from traveling.

The burning incident tapped into anti-foreign sentiment fueled by a popular perception that foreign troops disrespect Afghan culture and Islam.

NATO apologized Tuesday for the burning of the books, which had been pulled from the shelves of the Parwan Detention Facility, adjoining Bagram Air Field.

A?spokesman for ISAF, the US-led international forces in Afghanistan, said it is still unclear why several Qurans sent to a burn pit for disposal or who gave the orders.

German Gen. Karsten Jacobsen said an ISAF investigation is already under way to determine why and who gave the order to gather up the materials for disposal, and if there was any misconduct those responsible would be held accountable.

Jacobsen offered however that it appears those who gave the order may have been unaware that the Korans and other religious materials were included in the material marked for disposal.?

Jacobsen said early reports have not been confirmed that prisoners at the detention facility in Parwan were writing in the Qurans and using the Qurans to pass extremist and inflammatory messages to other prisoners.

Jacobsen added however that "even if that were true, it would not change the violent situation in the streets."

UN: Afghan civilian deaths in war reach record high

He said the Qurans were included in a considerable amount of material sent to the pit for routine burning, and were discovered by local Afghan workers. One of the Afghan laborers burned his hands retrieving the Qurans from the flames.

Jacobsen said that ISAF hopes to release the preliminary results of its investigation by Thursday morning.? "The objective is to be as visible and transparent as possible to try to calm the situation" and prevent further violence, he said.

The Afghan Interior Ministry earlier said in a statement that clashes during a protest in the eastern province of Parwan left four people dead. It said an investigation was under way to determine what happened.

The other deaths occurred at a U.S. base outside Kabul, where security guards killed one person, and in Jalalabad and Logar province, the ministry said.

The demonstration in Kabul drew thousands of protesters, who chanted "Death to America," hurled rocks and set tires alight outside a complex that is home to foreign contractors, police and some coalition military forces.

Nearby, angry demonstrators set a fuel truck ablaze on a main highway running east out of the city, sending black smoke billowing into the air.

In Tuesday's apology,?U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of American and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said the burning was an inadvertent error. "It was not a decision that was made with respect to the faith of Islam," he said. "It was a mistake. It was an error. The moment we found out about it we immediately stopped and we intervened."

Jim Miklaszewski, NBC News chief Pentagon correspondent,?The Associated Press, Reuters and msnbc.com staff contributed to this report.

Tennis instruction ? Further Guidelines | Tables

The question of how to play tennis is often one that is a challenge to new players learning the game. Tennis is a great sport with many different personalities. In this article, we will reveal the basics of how to play tennis. It has 3 forms hard, lawn and clay tennis. Tennis is played by people over the world as a great form of exercise and recreation. There are also many levels of professional play in tournaments around the world. There are four top tournaments called the Grand Slam Tournaments. These are Wimbledon, the US Open, The Australian Open, and the French Open. Millions of people watch these tournaments making tennis a great spectator sport as well. Recently, tennis was added to the Olympics as an official sport. Insights Into Factors Of Tennis Academy.

The tennis ball, as approved by United States Tennis Association (USTA), are colored fluorescent yellow as it is more visible in television. The ball diameter must be 65.41-68.58 mm (2.575-2.700 inches) and weighs between 56.0g and 59.4g (1.975-2.095 ounces). These are filled with air and a uniform felt-covered rubber compound surface which traps air flow boundary layer that reduces aerodynamic drag which will give balls a good bounce. Next, is the tennis court. This is a rectangular flat surface usually of grass, clay, concrete or a synthetic suspended. It is 78 feet (23.78m) full length and 39 feet length on one side. Its width is 27 feet (8.23m) for single matches and 36 feet (10.97m) for doubles matches. It has 4 service boxes, two service boxes each court. The service line measures 21 feet (6.40m) from the net. The baseline that is located at the edge of the court. A clear space is needed around the court for overrun balls. This measures 60 feet (18.3m) wide and 120 feet (36.7m) long. The net which measures 3 feet and 6 inches (1.07m) high at the posts and 3 feet (0.914m) high in the center is spread across the court.

There are three main types of tennis court surfaces. Each surface allows for a different style of play to excel as the bounce and speed of the ball can vary dramatically. These surfaces are: A hard court surface are generally fast courts that have a good consistent bounce of the ball. Hardcourts are the most popular type of courts in America and most likely the court most tennis players utilize. A clay court is much different than a hard court. It is usually much slower as a surface and tennis balls often lose speed when they hit the court. This surface also causes the ball to bounce higher than on other surfaces. This allows for longer groundstrokes rallies. We see players like Nadal and Federer grind it out all day on the Clay Courts at Rolland Garros.

Although a sound knowledge of the game, experience, and a certification are all parts of a successful resume, personality plays an equally important role in a tennis professional?s success. The ability to identify with a client on a personal level is a skill that helps to break down the barriers of communication and makes it easier for the student to learn. An instructor that can put their client at ease in a fun and relaxed lesson environment is typically more successful in relaying instruction. Admittedly, this is a skill set that you may not be able to evaluate before your first lesson, but if you quickly realize there?s no chemistry and it?s affecting your learning progress then its time for a change. Astute Tennis training Secrets ? The Latest.

Instead, demand results NOW while you?re on-court, and not at some later time. If your Tennis Teachers are truly worth their grain of salt, you?ll start improving with your very first tennis lesson, and will continue to improve with each successive tennis lesson. A good Tennis Teacher is absolutely worth the price. A poor Tennis Teacher simply waists your time and money. While certification does not guarantee a GREAT Tennis Coach, it certainly guarantees a reasonable minimum level of expertise. It?s unfortunate, but the vast majority of Tennis Coaches are unable to measure up to this requirement.

Tennis is a sport that is playable by all age groups and is enjoyed by players at all levels from kids to senior citizens. The basic area where tennis is played is call the court. This is a rectangular flat surface of varying types including concrete, grass, and clay. The standard tennis court is 78 feet long and 27 feet wide for singles matches. For doubles matches the width of the court is increased to 36 feet. A 3 feet 6 inch high net is stretched across the court, dividing the court in half. Tennis courts can be found in public parks, schools, and country clubs throughout the world. They can be outside or inside allowing for fresh air when the weather is good and year round play when the weather is bad.

So, if a Tennis Teacher only has an NTRP of 4.0, he/she can not teach you to play at NTRP 4.5 or higher. If you happen to improve beyond your Tennis Teachers NTRP level, it is solely due to your own abilities, not your Tennis Teacher?s. Always ask your potential Tennis Teachers their NTRP level. It is ill-advised to settle for a lower NTRP level for the sake of a lower price. You will only get what you paid for, with little or no lasting improvement. Instead, demand a high NTRP level to better assure yourself of more rapid improvement. While a higher USTA (United States Tennis Association) player ranking is no guarantee of getting good tennis lessons, it certainly does help. Tennis Instructors who have never been ranked, or have never even competed for a USTA ranking, should be avoided. Further Analysis Of Root Details For Tennis training.

Once a successful serve is made, players may hit it into any part of the opponent?s court until a point is scored. Rallies won by either player score points. A tennis match is divided into sets. In a tournament, men have to win three out of five sets to win the match and women have to win two out of three. In order to win a tennis match, six total games must be won ahead of his or her opponent. The game of tennis can be fun, exciting and enjoyable.

Courteney Cox drinks bowl of ranch dressing

Courteney Cox drinks ranch dressing on "Anderson."

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

The Hidden Valley Ranch dressing folks have got to be speed-dialing Courteney Cox's phone right about now.

The "Cougar Town" star appears on Anderson Cooper's syndicated talk show "Anderson" Tuesday to discuss her series and her relationship with husband David Arquette, but she also powered down part of a bowl of her favorite salad topper.

Turns out Cox loves Hidden Valley Ranch dressing so much that just using it on salads or as a dip for veggies isn't enough. When host Anderson Cooper provided her with a giant bowl of the stuff, she couldn't resist drinking some of it straight.

And restaurants, don't brag up your chef-crafted, all-organic versions of the stuff to?Cox.?She told the host that when restaurants tell her their ranch dressing is homemade, that's not what she wants to hear. "I'm like, 'Wrong answer,'" she said. "I want Hidden Valley."

Cox also told the host that she and husband Arquette, from whom she is separated, still have a good relationship,?but that daughter Coco, 7, is concerned about mom's feelings as Arquette moves on with other women.

"She says things like, 'Mom, I don't want you to get hurt, but daddy has a girlfriend," Cox told Cooper. "Obviously she'd like to see us back together because all kids do, but she understands that we're OK, that we love each other and we will always be a family."

Cox's interview with Cooper airs on "Anderson" Feb. 21. Check listings for local stations and air times.

Obama takes tougher stance on higher education

(AP) ? Access to college has been the driving force in federal higher education policy for decades. But the Obama administration is pushing a fundamental agenda shift that aggressively brings a new question into the debate: What are people getting for their money?

Students with loans are graduating on average with more than $25,000 in debt. The federal government pours $140 billion annually into federal grants and loans. Unemployment remains high, yet there are projected shortages in many industries with some high-tech companies already complaining about a lack of highly trained workers.

Meanwhile, literacy among college students has declined in the last decade, according to a commission convened during the George W. Bush administration that said American higher education has become "increasingly risk-averse, at times self-satisfied, and unduly expensive." About 40 percent of college students at four-year schools aren't graduating, and in two-year programs, only about 40 percent of students graduate or transfer, according to the policy and analysis group College Measures.

College drop-outs are expensive, and not just for the individual. About a fifth of full-time students who enroll at a community college do not return for a second year, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually, according to an analysis released last fall by the American Institutes for Research.

There's been a growing debate over whether post-secondary schools should be more transparent about the cost of an education and the success of graduates. President Barack Obama has weighed in with a strong "yes."

During his State of the Union address, Obama put the higher education on notice: "If you can't stop tuition from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will go down," he said. "Higher education can't be a luxury? it's an economic imperative that every family in America should be able to afford."

He wants to slightly reduce federal aid for schools that don't control tuition costs and shift it to those that do. He also has proposed an $8 billion program to train community college students for high-growth industries that would provide financial incentives to programs that ensured their trainees find work. Both proposals need congressional approval.

At the same time, the administration is developing both a "scorecard" for use in comparing school statistics such as graduation rates as well as a "shopping sheet" students would receive from schools they applied to with estimates of how much debt they might graduate with and estimated future payments on student loans.

American's higher education system has long been the backbone of much of the nation's success, and there's no doubt that a college degree is valuable. It's now projected that students with a bachelor's degree will earn a million more dollars over their lifetime than students with only a high school diploma, Education Secretary Arne Duncan says.

But Obama's statement to Congress jolted the higher education establishment, which believes that college isn't just to create foot soldiers for industry and that the use of measured outcomes would hurt the humanities, meaning fewer students will turn to Shakespeare and instead study engineering, said Anthony Carnevale, director of the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University. The community has already been reeling over an earlier administration decision to require career college programs ? many of which are at for-profit institutions ? to better prepare students for "gainful employment" or risk losing federal aid.

"It's the notion that the ...federal government will begin to say we want to know what we're paying for and we want to make sure that people don't pay for education programs that take them nowhere, especially if the program is supposed to get them a job, we want it to get them a job, Carnevale said.

Some fear that Obama might want to apply the "gainful employment" standards to traditional four-year degree programs. Robert Moran, director of federal relations at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, said reporting requires time and resources, and it's even more difficult to gauge the success of a graduate with an English degree than someone with a very specific career certificate.

Duncan said in an interview he doesn't see a big need to go in that direction now, although he does think it's important to track factors such as graduation rates and tuition costs. He said he tracked his graduates while serving as chief executive officer of the Chicago Public Schools and noticed that some universities were graduating them at rates of 75 percent or more, while others were graduating them at a small fraction of that.

"Colleges aren't too dissimilar to high schools. Some have done a great job building cultures around completion and obtainment and some haven't," Duncan said.

Historically, policy conversations have centered on getting students into college. Duncan said graduating is just as important.

"To be real clear, I think that's been the problem with federal policy in the past is 100 percent has been focused on the front end on inputs, that's clearly important, but that's the starting point. That gets you in the game. The goal isn't to get to the game, the goal is to get to the finish line," Duncan said.

Obama isn't the first president to encourage dialogue on making higher education more affordable and accountable. In addition to convening a commission to study higher education in America, Bush's administration issued grants to states to link transcript data with other records to better track the success of graduates from public institutions. The Obama administration has continued the program.

But Obama is taking the conversation to another level. That doesn't mean, however, he's abandoning the issue of accessibility. His administration has expanded the availability of Pell grants, supported a tax credit for tuition costs and is attempting to make it easier for some graduates to pay back loans.

Experts say some of the challenges in higher education result from too many students entering the doors without basic math and English skills. There's also the question of how to measure how effective colleges are and whether tuition increases are appropriate ? especially for public institutions facing dramatic budget cuts.

Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., the former president of Mayland Community College, said the issues raised by Obama are being addressed at the state and local level, where she said they should be handled, and that many schools are coming up with innovative ways to cut costs and to find ways to work with local industry. As an example, she recalled developing, while a community college president, a course in supervisory training after local industry sought it.

"All of these things the president talks about can be done at the local and state level, and are being done at the local and state level," Foxx said. "It isn't the role of government to guarantee somebody a good job after they graduate from college or community college."

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., takes a different view.

"Right now, the information about the potential of various careers, the track records of colleges and the like is essentially strewn all over the countryside," said Wyden, who authored a bill on making college costs more transparent.

He added, "I think students and their parents are now saying in addition to accessibility, we want to wring the maximum value out of every dollar we're spending on education."

Travel Insurance? | Travel Tips & Trip Ideas Forum | Fodor's Travel ...

We are driving to the beach this summer and will be staying in a condo for two weeks.{ North Carolina} It was explained to me that they no longer give refunds for mandatory evacuations because of hurricanes. It was suggested that I purchase travel insurance from them to cover the cost of my condo rental in case of evacuations, or if I have to cancel my trip because of sickness, injury or death. It is also covered if I have to interrupt my trip. Their price is $121.34. The cost of my rent is $1500.00. Has anyone purchased a policy on their own? If so ,who did you go through? I would think it would probably be cheaper to buy it myself. I don't need heath insurance like some of the policies cover, just concerned about covering the cost of my rental. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thank You

(AP) ? Police opened fire with tear gas Saturday on a commercial avenue in Senegal's capital, as security forces wrapped up early voting in a contentious presidential race.

It marks the fourth straight day of protests before next week's critical election, which is pitting the country's 85-year-old president against a young opposition demanding his departure. The increasingly tense atmosphere on the ground has many concerned there may be unrest if President Abdoulaye Wade is declared the winner of the vote.

On Saturday morning, the country's 23,000-strong security force including police and military, lined up to vote early. European Union observers said the ballots had arrived on time and voting proceeded calmly.

The normally bustling capital of Senegal has been disrupted by protests every few days since January when the country's highest court ruled that Wade could be a candidate in this month's election. Just months shy of his 86th birthday, Wade is seeking another seven-year term in a nation where most people don't live past the age of 60.

If he wins, it would be his third term, even though he oversaw a revision to the constitution in 2001 imposing a two-term limit.

Shopkeepers pulled down metal grills to protect their businesses as the blast of tear gas being fired resonated in the capital's downtown core. The vendors that hawk their wares on the street hurried to pack up their goods.

Four people have been killed since the protests began, a death toll that is small compared to the election violence that recently gripped Ivory Coast, Guinea, Nigeria and Congo, but high for Senegal which has long been seen as a model of tolerance and stability.

Late Friday, police attempting to disperse a crowd launched a tear gas grenade inside a mosque belonging to the Tidiane Muslim "confrerie," or brotherhood. Enraged worshippers ran outside.

Senegalese TV showed an officer who braved the cloud of gas in order to kick away the spewing canister from the door of the mosque, in order to calm the anger.

The country's Muslim brotherhoods hold enormous sway, and on Saturday, Interior Minister Ousmane Ngom traveled to Tivaouane, home of the Tidiane's khalife, religious leader. A mob of angry youths encircled the house of the khalife, as Ngom was inside, according to Ngom's spokesman Mbaye Thiam who was reached by telephone in Dakar.

The state-owned news service said that the youths were preventing Ngom from leaving and that they had also set fire to a government building nearby.

Milan routs Arsenal in Champions

By MATTIAS KAREN

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:13 p.m. ET Feb. 15, 2012

LONDON (AP) -The most highly anticipated matchup of the Champions League's first knockout round was hardly even a contest.

AC Milan outclassed Arsenal on Wednesday to plant one foot firmly in the Champions League quarterfinals, beating the English club 4-0 in the first leg of their round of 16 series.

Zenit St. Petersburg also secured a slimmer advantage by beating Benfica 3-2 at home earlier, but Milan produced the most convincing display of the knockout round so far as the meeting of two top teams turned into a rout.

Robinho scored twice at the San Siro after Kevin-Prince Boateng had given Milan the lead with an unstoppable volley, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all but finished off the Gunners with a penalty in the 79th as the hosts repeatedly exposed Arsenal's weakness in defense.

"We played a perfect match, especially in defense," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "We played very well as a team, we didn't give them any goalscoring chances. We deserved this night, this win. It's the best game we've played this year."

The result puts the Italian club on the verge of its first quarterfinal appearance since it won the tournament in 2007, and goes some way toward erasing the memories of the team's struggles against English teams in recent years. It was eliminated by Premier League clubs at this stage of the Champions League in three of the past for years.

For Arsenal, it was another letdown in a season that has already seen it fall out of the Premier League title race and struggling to secure a spot in next season's Champions League.

"We were never in the game," Wenger said. "We were very poor offensively and defensively. It was shocking to see how we were beaten everywhere. It was our worst performance in Europe by far. Not once in the 90 minutes were we in the game."

It also provided a disappointing finish to Thierry Henry's loan spell at Arsenal, as he played his last game before returning to the New York Red Bulls.

Henry came on as a second-half substitute but could do little to inspire a lackluster Arsenal, although his neat flick-on set up Robin Van Persie for the visitors' best chance in the 66th. Van Persie unleashed a hard shot that forced a stellar diving save from Christian Abbiati, who pushed the ball just wide.

By then, though, Milan had already decided the game.

Boateng, making his first start in a month after tearing a thigh muscle, put Milan ahead in the 15th after received a pass from Antonio Nocerino on the edge of the area. The midfielder downed it with his chest and then unleashed a fierce volley from a tight angle that sailed in via the crossbar past a stunned Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Milan was just getting started, and repeatedly harassed Arsenal's defense on quick counterattacks. Ibrahimovic was at the center of many of them, and it was the Sweden striker who set up Robinho for both of the Brazil forward's goals.

Ibrahimovic streaked down the left flank in the 38th before crossing back to Robinho, who headed the ball past Szczesny inside the far post to make it 2-0.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger put on Henry for the ineffective Theo Walcott after the break to chase an away goal, only to see Robinho add the third just four minutes after the restart.

Ibrahimovic laid the ball off for Robinho to run onto outside the area, and he fired a hard shot inside the near post.

Ibrahimovic then all but ended any hopes of an Arsenal comeback in next month's second leg when he was brought down by Johan Djourou in the area and slotted the penalty just out of reach of Szczesny.

"We didn't have the best of games but you have to give credit to Milan," Szczesny said. "They punished us on every occasion and scored some quality goals. They deserved to win. It's very disappointing day for us and hopefully we can pick ourselves up and challenge them in the second leg."

Benfica has a much better chance of overcoming its deficit, and looked likely to leave Russia with a draw

But Roman Shirokov scored his second goal of the game just two minutes later to hand Benfica its first loss of the tournament this season.

Maxi Pereira put Benfica ahead in the 20th, tapping the ball in after second-choice goalkeeper Yuri Zhevnov spilled Cardozo's free kick, but Shirokov equalized seven minutes later. Substitute Sergei Semak made it 2-1 with a backheel in the 71st.

With two away goals, Benfica coach Jorge Jesus was still hopeful of reaching the quarterfinals.

"We're down but not out. We can turn this around in our own stadium, in front of our own fans," Jesus said. "It was a shame they grabbed that third goal, just when it seemed impossible."

Thinking About Investing in Rental Real Estate? | Benchmark ...

It?s easy to get thrown off by the appearance of a property, your emotions, or what the media is saying. Here are four ways to avoid making that mistake if you are thinking about investing in rental real estate:

Reality Check One: Who is Your Target Market?

If the property is a good fit for your target market, it doesn?t matter if you wouldn?t live there. A renter may enjoy the property.

Reality Check Two: Are You Emotionally Involved?

Emotions shouldn?t be involved in buying a rental property, but it?s something to be wary of. If, at any point in the negotiations, you feel you can?t walk away from the deal, you need to take a step back and review everything! When your emotions are involved, you can?t make rational decisions. It is also a good idea to have a trusted?adviser?to bounce ideas off and receive confirmation when the property is good.

Reality Check Three: Are the Numbers Really What They Say They Are?

The numbers might look good on paper, but will the rent cover all the expenses? Make sure the numbers are what the sellers say they are. Get copies of any leases to verify rents. Check market rental rates for the area to make sure the current tenants aren?t under or overpaying. And make sure you obtain copies of the bills you?ll be responsible for (taxes, utilities, insurance, etc.).

Reality Check Four: Are You Judging the Book by Its Cover?

Many opportunities are missed because a property makes a negative first impression. The best deals are often those that look rough but can be easily rehabbed. Some properties may need a major face-lift to maximize its potential ? but don?t judge a property strictly on its looks or you may miss out on a deal that could pay off big in the long run.

Money From Home- What Does It Take?

What does it take to earn money from home or is the idea just a dream that is beyond the average person?s reach? That is the question many people face when they are looking to increase their income. The question has two parts but the answers to each part are definitely related and intertwined.

Clearly, I believe, the best way to make money from home is through the use of the internet. It offers an access to the most people for the least cost. It is estimated that there are over 2 trillion people on the web as of the end of 2011. If you were able to simply interact with 1/100 of one percent of those users you would have access to over 200,000 people from your own home computer desk. That is what I call leverage!

Earn Money From Home Using the Internet

The truth is that there are many different business models to leverage the internet successfully, whether it be through affiliate marketing, e-commerce,Money From Home auction sites, surveys or numerous other methods. The model of choice depends on your specific goals and your willingness to learn and apply the skills needed for that particular model.

I believe that the most sustainable and profitable online business model is affiliate marketing. This model, simply put, allows you to sell other people?s products/ services and make a commission on each sale you initiate. It allows for unlimited income potential and multiple streams of income. Affiliate marketing also eliminates many of the costly problems of other online business models such as inventory, shipping, and product creation to name a few.

Fine? But What does it take to earn money from home?

The real answer has much less to do with the ?how to? of any business model then it has to do with a person?s attitude. Their attitude will determine if a person is willing to step out of his/her comfort zone and learn the new skills that an online business will require. Their attitude will determine if a person will put forth a consistent effort for a sufficient amount of time to see results.

We are an ?instant? society. If we don?t see results immediately, we move on to the next shiny object that catches our eye. Earning money from home will take effort, AND it will take time to become skilled at whatever the business model demands.

We have all heard the quote from Yoda??There is only do, or do not. There is no try.? That may just be a line in a movie to some people, but it?s message speaks volumes.

Yes, there are skills to be learned, and yes there may be uncomfortable times, but the willingness to keep going is what creates success. It is the attitude and desire that you bring to the table that will determine the outcome of any project.

So? Can the Average person earn money from home?

The answer is? of course. The real question is will the average person be willing to do what is necessary for a long enough period of time to see the rewards of that effort? If so, that is an above average commitment, and the reward of earning money from home is well worth it.

?

Sincerely,

US, Europe look at fast but risky penalty on Iran (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The United States and Europe are considering unprecedented punishment against Iran that could immediately cripple the country's financial lifeline. But it's an extreme option in the banking world that would come with its own costs.

The Obama administration wants Iran evicted from SWIFT, an independent financial clearinghouse that is crucial to the country's overseas oil sales. That would leapfrog the current slow-pressure campaign of sanctions aimed at persuading Iran to drop what the U.S. and its allies contend is a drive toward developing and building nuclear weapons. It also perhaps would buy time for the U.S. to persuade Israel not to launch a pre-emptive military strike on Iran this spring.

The last-resort financial effort suggests the U.S. and Europe are grasping for ways to show immediate results because economic sanctions have so far failed to force Iran back to nuclear talks

But such a penalty could send oil prices soaring when many of the world's economies are still frail. It also could hurt ordinary Iranians and undercut the reputation of SWIFT, a banking hub used by virtually every nation and corporation around the world. The organization's full name is the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications.

Meanwhile, violence is increasing. Explosions in Bangkok on Tuesday ? Israel's defense minister labeled them an "attempted terrorist attack" ? came the day after Israel accused Iran of trying to kill its diplomats in India and Georgia. Those attacks followed the recent killings of Iranian scientists.

In the financial world, the United States can't order SWIFT to kick Iran out. But it has leverage in that it can punish the Brussels-based organization's board of directors individually, possibly freezing their assets or limiting their travel. Talks are focused now on having Europe make the first move.

Short of total expulsion, Washington and representatives of several European nations are in talks over ways to restrict Iran's use of the banking consortium to collect oil profits.

The Obama administration is divided over whether the possible gain is worth the risk in trying to threaten SWIFT into kicking out a member country, in part because of concern that it would set back the global financial recovery. Iran remains a global financial player despite years of banking sanctions, and blocking it from using the respected transfer system would be a black mark like no other.

More than 40 Iranian banks and institutions use SWIFT to process financial transactions, and losing access to that flow of international funds could badly damage the Islamic republic's economy. It would also probably hurt average Iranians more than the welter of existing banking sanctions already in place since prices for household goods would rise while the value of Iranian currency would drop.

Lawyers for SWIFT are holding meetings in Washington. People familiar with the talks say a compromise is possible in which SWIFT would voluntarily bar or restrict Iranian transfers.

But if SWIFT fails to act on its own, the U.S. expects Europe to require it to terminate services for Iranian banks, one Obama administration official said.

David Cohen, the Treasury Department's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, delivered that message to European Union officials in Brussels earlier this month, said the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly and thus spoke only on the condition of anonymity.

Mark Dubowitz, a sanctions expert advising the White House on Iran, said the Obama administration is having detailed discussions on the merits and consequences of forcing SWIFT to block Iranian transactions.

Some in the administration also prefer to give time for new sanctions on Iran's Central Bank, officially enforced starting just this month, to take hold before layering on a round of even more draconian penalties.

SWIFT was involved in a separate controversy when it was revealed in 2006 that it had skirted the EU's strict privacy laws after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks by transferring millions of pieces of personal information from its U.S. offices to American authorities as part of the US Terrorist Finance Tracking Program.

"It is an essential cog in the wheel, if not the wheel itself, in international financial transactions and trade," said David Aufhauser, former general counsel at the Treasury Department who worked with SWIFT to set up that information transfer.

SWIFT handles cross-border payments for more than 10,000 financial institutions and corporations in 210 countries. It lets users exchange financial information securely and reliably, thereby lowering costs and reducing risk. It operates on trust and neutrality ? SWIFT accepts nearly all comers and does not judge the merits of the transactions passing through its secure message system. Its managers generally brush off investigators and enforcement agencies, telling them to take up suspected wrongdoing directly with nations or corporations.

Established in 1973, the essential but little-known hub is overseen by major central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank.

Lawyers familiar with SWIFT's operations said it could bar processing actions with any Iranian party or third parties representing Iran, though that would open the consortium to complaints of favoritism or political influence. It could permit the processing but quarantine Iranian transactions, or require warnings to those doing business with Iran. Penalties on Iran short of expulsion could allow SWIFT to preserve a greater appearance of neutrality but make business partners think twice, lawyers said.

Proponents of blocking Iran from SWIFT say the financial network's own bylaws require that its services not be used to facilitate illegal activities and allow it to prohibit users that are subject to sanctions.

While the U.S. and Europe debate options, some American lawmakers are trying to increase pressure on SWIFT. The Senate Banking Committee passed a measure earlier this month directing the White House to press SWIFT to block Iranian entities.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also introduced a tougher bill that would compel the administration to sanction SWIFT unless it stopped providing services to Iran.

If lawmakers were to pass a compromise bill, final legislation could land on the president's desk in late spring or early summer, according to a senior Senate aide.

The pending legislation has caught the attention of officials at SWIFT. The financial network's general counsel and other advisers requested a meeting with congressional lawmakers and staff, the aide said.

Those meetings are scheduled in Washington for the week of Feb. 20, said the aide, who also spoke only on condition of anonymity.

Officials close to the White House say the Obama administration is comfortable with the less restrictive language in the Senate Banking Committee measure, but has concerns that more-binding legislation would leave the U.S. less flexibility in dealing with Iran.

SWIFT did not respond to requests for comment. In a brief statement posted on its website, the consortium said it is committed to fighting misuse of the financial system to finance terrorism and has cooperated with enforcement agencies in the U.S. and Europe.

Without addressing the specifics of a full expulsion or more limited block on Iranian transactions, SWIFT's statement urged caution.

"SWIFT remains committed to maintaining its role as a neutral global financial communications network" while complying with sanctions laws, the statement said.
