"A Different View: Travels With Team Easy" Now on Kindle; Helps Cooking With the Troops

In 2007, my good friend and Cooking With the Troops pardner Blake Powers embedded with "Team Easy" in Iraq. Camera in hand, Blake chronicled a little-documented aspect of the war: not the combat, but the 90-99 percent of the time that is tedium or boredom.

Blake has compiled his photos into a book, A Different View: Travels With Team Easy, Iraq 2007. Good soul that he is, Blake has pledged 10% of the profits to benefit Cooking With the Troops.

"I work with soldiers on a daily basis and many friends and family have deployed in the past few years. But still, my ideas of their time there comes mostly from what I see and hear in the media. Mr. Powers presents a very different picture of the soldier's time in Iraq than I had been exposed to. It is beautifully photographed, a visual feast; his insightful comments add to the experience. Definitely worth the purchase price, and then some!"?

The good cause contribution is... icing on the cake. Again, as EmmDee would say: Get thee with the quickness!

Toyota to recall Lexus SUVs to fix floor mat

(AP) ? Toyota's problems with runaway acceleration just won't go away.

Three years after the company recalled its first cars to fix the problem, it has identified two more models at risk, the 2010 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450H SUVs.

Toyota said Friday it will recall 154,000 of the luxury SUVs because their floor mats can trap the gas pedal and cause the SUVs to speed up without warning. U.S. safety regulators, who asked Toyota to recall the vehicles, may investigate whether the company reported the problem fast enough.

Toyota's action adds to a string of embarrassing safety recalls that began in 2009. The Japanese automaker has recalled more than 14 million vehicles globally to fix problems including sticky gas pedals and floor mats. The recalls tarnished the company's sterling reputation for reliability and cut into sales. Toyota says it thought the acceleration problem had been solved when it began selling the SUVs.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sought the latest recall after reviewing complaints from customers and information from the company. The agency does not believe any additional Toyota vehicles have the same problem.

If NHTSA decides to open an investigation, it wouldn't be the first dustup between Toyota and the agency. In 2010 and 2011, Toyota paid a record $48.8 million in fines to the government for failing to promptly alert regulators to safety problems.

Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said the company is cooperating with NHTSA and provided information in a timely manner after investigators asked for it.

Owners of the Lexus SUVs should take out the driver's side floor mat and have their vehicles serviced as quickly as possible, NHTSA said.

They will be notified of the problem by mail in early August, and dealers will fix it for free, Toyota said.

Experts say if your car accelerates unexpectedly, you should step on the brake and shift into neutral, steer safely to the roadside and shut off the engine.

Toyota's string of unintended acceleration recalls occurred in 2009 and 2010, raising suspicions about Toyota's electronic throttle controls. NHTSA brought in scientists from NASA to help investigate, finding nothing wrong with the electronics in a probe that ended early in 2011. NHTSA said at the time recalls for sticky gas pedals and floor mats would take care of unintended acceleration.

The recalls hit nearly all of Toyota's models at some point during the crisis, everything from the Tundra pickup to its most popular cars, the Camry and Corolla.

Although Friday's recall comes years after the Lexus SUVs were introduced, a NHTSA spokeswoman said the agency had no data to seek a recall before that.

By the time the Lexus SUVs went on sale in late 2009, the company thought it had solved any acceleration problem with a new mat design, Toyota's Lyons said.

"It had a newer, thinner, more pliable all-weather floor mat," he said.

In a study of complaints, Toyota found that the new mats worked without problems as long as they were secured properly and other mats weren't stacked on top of them, Lyons said.

Still, the company will trim the size of the gas pedal to make more room between it and the floor to avoid future problems, he said.

When NHTSA closed its Toyota unintended acceleration probe in 2011, there were no complaints about the RX 350 from model years 2008 and 2009, and only three complaints from the 2010 model year, agency spokeswoman Lynda Tran said. There also were no complaints about the RX 450 H gas-electric hybrid.

But government investigators noticed an increase in complaints about the Lexus SUVs late last month, and they asked Toyota about the problem. Last week, Toyota told the agency that it had a "significant volume" of complaints about the same issue, so NHTSA asked for the recall, the agency said in a statement.

Now, NHTSA has asked Toyota for more documentation to see if the company "met its obligation to notify the agency and conduct a recall in a timely manner," NHTSA said.

Experts fear Texas emergency room overcrowding under new law

by JANET ST. JAMES

DALLAS - The Supreme Court health care law decision Thursday may bring big crowds in Texas' hospital waiting rooms.

President Obama's health care law is designed to make sure more people will get health care -- particularly preventive health care. But there are simply not enough primary care doctors in Texas to handle an extra six million patients.

Up to a million-and-a-half of those patients will be newly qualified for Medicaid. However, about a third of all family doctors in the state don't accept Medicaid anymore because of low reimbursements and the general hassle of government red tape.

The health care law doesn't order doctors to accept Medicaid patients, so the result may be even worse overcrowding of our emergency rooms.

"I think many of those people don't currently have a primary care provider that they utilize," said DFW Hospital Council President Steve Love. "Therefore, they're going to come to the emergency room. Many of them may still come to the emergency room at a more advanced stage of their illness, even without any kind of coverage."

Experts from many organizations say access to those first-line doctors is a huge concern.

Medical schools will have to churn out more family practice doctors, and more family practice physicians will have to be willing to take Medicaid.

Those issues aren't likely to be solved in the next two years, when the full force of the health care plan takes effect, so emergency rooms will feel an impact.

In May, the US Army Special Operations Command in Africa (SOCAFRICA) confirmed that US forces have moved beyond Entebbe (Uganda) to establish various forward operating bases ('Combined Operations Fusion Centres') in areas of LRA activity: the borderlands of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic (CAR) and South Sudan. SOCAFRICA states that the LRA has been reduced to 'survival mode' only. Apart from its significance to regional security, the question arises whether joint anti-LRA operations herald a new model or precedent of US military engagement in Africa generall?

Union County Fireworks Show Canceled due to Burn Ban

Due to the burn ban currently in effect in Union County, the fireworks show scheduled for Wednesday, July 4, will be rescheduled for New Year's Eve.

The decision was made after consulting with the El Dorado Fire Department, Union County Judge Mike Loftin and the Arkansas Forestry Commission. The hot, dry weather conditions are not expected to change between now and Wednesday night.

"It's unfortunate, but it comes down to a safety issue," said Henry Florsheim, Chamber of Commerce president & CEO. "By rescheduling to New Year's Eve, the community will have a family-friendly way to ring in 2013."

(AP) ? Google shareholders gave CEO Larry Page what he wanted Thursday by approving an unconventional stock split meant to cement his authority, but he wasn't around to hail the victory.

Page missed the Internet search leader's annual shareholders meeting because he has lost his voice, a previously undisclosed problem. Google didn't provide any other details about co-founder Page's condition except that whatever is ailing him isn't serious enough to prevent him from fulfilling his duties as CEO.

The voice difficulty is serious enough to prevent Page, 39, from speaking next week at a conference in San Francisco, where Google is expected to show off some of the latest innovations in its Android operating system for smartphones and tablet computers. He also is expected to skip a conference call next month to review Google's financial results for the second quarter.

Until his voice recovers, Page is relying on email and other written forms of communication to convey his thoughts. It might not be a huge adjustment for him. Even when his voice is at full strength, the soft-spoken Page can be reticent.

Page's absence was the biggest surprise at an annual meeting in Mountain View that featured familiar jokes about Google's free food and prosperity. A few critics also raised frequently asked questions about Google's methods for tracking its users' preferences and Web surfing activities.

Even the approval of the first stock split in Google's eight years as a publicly traded company was a foregone conclusion. That's because it had the backing of Page, fellow co-founder Sergey Brin and Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt. Combined, the three control about two-thirds of the voting power at Google.

The company didn't announce the specific vote results Thursday, but said the stock-split plan had won majority support.

Google Inc. doesn't expect be able to split the stock until at least October. That's because Google won't do so until it resolves a shareholder lawsuit challenging the plan. The complaint, filed in Delaware state court, alleges that the board breached its fiduciary duty by acceding to the wishes of Page and Brin.

The stock split is meant to ensure Page and Brin can overrule all other shareholders on any vote. They have retained this power since Google went public in 2004, but they worried that their authority could be undermined as Google issues more shares to compensate employees and finance future acquisitions.

To preserve their power, Page and Brin persuaded Google's board to approve a new class of non-voting stock. Google can draw upon this new "C'' class of shares without diluting Page and Brin, who currently hold a combined 56 percent of the voting power at the company.

The plan calls for a share of Class C stock to be given for every share of the existing Class A stock. That has the effect of cutting the value of each Class A share in half while doubling the total owned by each stockholder. In other words, 100 shares of Class stock worth $565.21 apiece at Thursday's closing price would become 200 shares worth about $282.60 apiece after the split.

Page is protecting his power at a time when Google's stock has been lagging the overall market and the company's peers.

Since Page replaced Schmidt as CEO in April 2011, Google's stock has declined 4 percent while the technology-laded Nasdaq composite index and Dow Jones industrial average have gained 2 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index has dipped by less than 1 percent during the same period.

Meanwhile, investors have been embracing two of Google's biggest rivals. While Page has been running Google, Apple Inc.'s stock has surged 68 percent and Microsoft Corp.'s has risen 18 percent.

Google has been hurt by investor concerns about the falling prices for its online search ads, the risks posed by its recent $12.5 billion purchase of device maker Motorola Mobility Holdings and the potential fallout from intensifying battles with government regulators around the world.

Another potentially thorny issue emerged on the regulatory front Thursday with the news that the Texas attorney general's office is accusing the company of improperly withholding internal documents to stymie an investigation into its business practices. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is seeking a court order that would require Google to turn over more of the evidence that it's trying to shield.

OUR BABY SHOWER?. FATHERS DAY AND THE EXTRA LARGE ...

June 19, 2012 ? by Ben Baller ? 6 comments

yep
I?m currently in ?the town? just got in from a lightweight night at the bar? no NOT munchbar, never again to that shit hole?.

let?s start with thursday?s breakfast with my boy Eric Dlux? we planned on lunch at Porto?s but the line was longer than a Drake concert. shit was NO joke, so we headed a little bit south but still in Burbank to this breakfast spot called ?Bea Beas? and it?s the talk of that area, but I think there are still better spots in LA. shit I think even Toast fucks with it, but def. many other spots. it was good though?. me and Eric got to catch up on a bunch of shit and he?s blowing up and traveling the earth doing his thing?. shout out to my boy big syphe who is also doing big things with his new single with Pitbull off the Men In Black III soundtrack going platinum! good shit Syphe!

the omelet was good. not the best I?ve ever had and the smore?s pancakes were good, but not great? but the most important thing was that the company was good! thanks Eric!

for dinner that night, I headed over to STK for the lil homey Yousef who manages the diamond store on fairfax?s birthday dinner and party after?..

the food at STK if you get the right thing is 100% official?. we chilled with the whole diamond fam, minus a few cats who were busy and even Nic joined us?. then we all headed over to Playhouse to see our boy Eric Dlux do his thing and I swear to god, for LA and it being such a hollywood spot, he got dirty dirty ratchet on the crowd and they loved it?.. frenchie to 2 chainz! crazy!

you already know I was on the mic ruining everyone?s night!

I was lit and for the first time, didn?t have my car there, so the homey Tony drove me home safely. (thanks G)

Friday, I sat my monkey ass at home and handled all the pre party arrangements for our big baby shower, I got a swag massage down the street from our house and then a mani/pedi and Nic did the same?. for dinner? I hit this peruvian spot in Glendale called ?mamitas? and I?ve been before and I will say their food got better, but still can?t fuck with Marios??.

but again, it?s so rare that I get to invite my mom and family over to mingle with my friends and all get together to drink wine, pop champagne (rose?) and eat all together; so I had a wonderful time. my in laws are all so amazing and Nic?s whole side of the family are incredible people. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SHOWED UP!!!
