A Sunday Afternoon Poem - Martha's Vineyard, MA Patch

Sandy

What a fitting name
Sand born of rock
Transcended time
On it?s patient way
From bones of earth to
Dust in wind
Taxi of a traveling scream
Awakening souls

Why does it take the wind descending
To bind so many men
In awe and fear to fathom
Power that often seems so far away
Out of sight ? out of mind

Why does it take the howling in the darkness
To make us feel each other
To remember how we used to be
The eye of the storm is always

Within us all each day
Bound at core
Yet making believe
Distance serves our days?

Wind and salt
Cleanse the wounds
Release the faults
Renew the moons

~ Betty Martin Wlodyka

Betty Martin Wlodyka has written poetry and painted art since she her youth.? She was trained to work with the earliest computers, and worked on many of the huge early units in NYC. While living in New York she also began to paint in oils.

In 1968 she left the city atmosphere and computer rooms behind for the rolling deck of a commercial fishing boat. She worked as the mate on a mid-sized dragger on the inshore waters of Cape Cod, Cape Ann, and around the Vineyard and Nantucket as part of a nomadic fleet that frequented Menemsha. She later came ashore to live year round in Chilmark and to raise a family. She returned to oil painting when her second child was about 2-years-old.

Betty found success with her stark island landscapes that addressed the interface of land and ocean, as well as her tiny vignettes of the Vineyard. She presented her art at many one-woman shows without agency, only doing group shows 2 or 3 times. She built a large addition on to a small house, along with several studios to showcase her art.? Betty also does preliminary home design consultations, with a focus in applying new ecologically green methods.? She is currently writing poetry, prose, lyrics, painting and planning two art shows.? The first will be the 2nd week of August 2013 in Chilmark and the second in the Fall TBA.??
