Kingstree High School girls basketball coach killed in crash

Sonya Burgess, the head coach for the Kingstree High School girls basketball team, was killed in a car crash Monday night according to Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight.

Highway Patrol is investigating the crash that happened about 6:32 p.m. on?Highway 52 near Cades Road in the Cades community of Williamsburg County at the intersection of Highway 52 and Cades Crossroads, according to Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant.

Currently Highway Patrol believes two other cars were involved in the crash that both left the scene. They do not have descriptions of the vehicles, but are reviewing surveillance video to identify the vehicles.

Troopers believe?one vehicle pulled out of a gas station close to the scene of the crash and traveled?north in the?southbound lane of Highway 52.

Burgess was driving a 1999 Ford Expedition traveling south on?Highway 52, said Wyant.

Burgess swerved to the right to avoid a head on collision with the unknown vehicle. Troopers believe Burgess then overcorrected to the left and flipped the Expedition on the roadway, said Wyant.

Burgess was able to get out of the SUV and was on the roadway when troopers believe a second unknown vehicle traveling?northbound?hit Burgess as she was in the roadway, said Wyant.

The second unknown vehicle also left the scene, said Wyant.

The MAIT Team is investigating?and trying to?come up with?descriptions of the?other?vehicles.

Burgess was driving the car with three children inside. The children were taken to Williamsburg Regional Hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

According to the Kingstree High School website, Burgess, 39, was the science department chair. She was also the high school's athletic director and varsity girls basketball and volleyball coach.

The Kingstree girls basketball team advanced to the 2A state quarterfinals Friday night with an overtime win against Mullins. They are scheduled to play at Lake City Tuesday night at 7 p.m. No word yet on whether that game may be postponed.
